Mathieu WEEMAELS

Brussels, Belgium

Mathieu Weemaels is a Belgian painter and pastellist, born in 1967 and currently residing and working in Brussels. While his work is mainly figurative, it also possesses an abstract dimension in both form, as seen in his search for radical compositions, and in substance, which evokes silence, solitude, and contemplation. The closed world of his studio serves as the starting point for most of his paintings, which feature simple, everyday objects such as candles, jackets hanging from nails, fabrics, tables, papers, fruits, and flowers. Mirrors are a recurring element in his compositions, reflecting a reality that serves as a window into another possible reality within reach. Alongside his compositions with various objects, the human figure is also present in a series of nudes that have evolved over time. Landscapes and urban landscapes constitute a third major category in his oeuvre.
